Term 3 2025-26 Action Post: Care for our Place – Celebrating Land-Based Pedagogy Through the 2026-27 School Year

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

Some of the actions taken during the 2025-26 School Year have included:

  • Teacher Consultant, Allie Ridley, working in all classrooms – learning indigenous knowledge and land-based pedagogy.
  • A school-wide Winter Solstice Event to celebrate student learning with a focus on ‘What is nature teaching us? Why is it important?”
  • We started a ‘Thompson Care Giving Club” – a group of students focused on care-taking initiatives around the school including the tending of outdoor courtyard areas and planting of indigenous plants, watering gardens, painting benches, building shelves, instilling positive behaviour during recess and lunch and leading a school-wide initiative to support a local charity organization with over 150 clothing items. 
  • In June we had our final ‘Social Responsibility’ Assembly with a focus on taking care of the land, National Indigenous Day and a community initiative through the Fraser River Keepers, that will invite growing our connection to the local waterways, deepen our understanding and providing ample opportunity to consider the importance of indigenous knowledge and stewardship since time immemorial. 
This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:These actions support out school’s learning focus in fostering an overall sense of belonging and embodying our Thompson CARES model of showing care for self, others and place. The outdoor courtyards are also being used in a well-way for students who benefit from self-regulating activities and having these designated spaces is proving to be very helpful for students throughout the grades.
