Evidence Post- Looking at the Data

What’s next?

During our May Professional Development Day, the staff was engaged in a scan of school wide data. We started the day with a walk and talk, discussing:

What is working well this year? What is difficult? What are your next steps? What are your hopes and dreams moving forward?

This was followed by a Gallery Walk/Chalk Talk thinking routine of the following data: Term 2 Literacy and Numeracy Proficiency Indicators, Middle Years Development Index Data, FSA results, SPARK reading assessment, English Language Learner Assessments,, Anecdotal Data from our Education Assistants, Student scan where we asked students “What do you want to see or hear more of at school?”, and Core Competency Student Self Assessments and Reflections.

This September we looked at themes and points of interest emerging from this data.

We noticed:

  • Students are needing more tools for Self -Regulation and Social Emotional Learning (Staff perspectives from Padlet Questions)
  • 76 percent of gr. 4 students, and 72 percent of grade 7s feel like school is a place they belong all or most of the time (from Learning survey 2022/23 data)
  • 58 percent of grade 4 students and 49 percent of grade 7 students feel good about themselves most or all of the time (from Learning survey 2022/23 data)
  • 42 percent of grade 4 students and 86 percent of grade 7 students said they were taught how to improve how they learn most or all of the time (from Learning survey 2022/23 data)
  • 16 percent of grade 4 students set a goal when learning something new (from Learning survey 2022/23 data)
  • When students were asked in their family team groups “What do you want to hear or see more of at school?” all teams commented that they would like to hear kinder words from their peers

The common themes that emerged were:

- improving student self-regulation skills and goal setting

-a concern about the current student lexicon of put downs and inappropriate language for school

-increasing feelings of belonging and improving students' positive self concept.

 Next Steps:

Using information from this scan, we will craft a new focus and develop a hunch that will drive out Professional Learning for the 2023/24 year.
