Dear Kindergarten Families,
Welcome to Kindergarten! In September your child will begin a new adventure of exploration and learning. This is sure to be an exciting time for your child, your family, and our school staff as we begin the school year together. To help each child begin the year successfully, we have a gradual entry schedule into Kindergarten. What is gradual entry and why is it so important for children entering Kindergarten?
During gradual entry, children will begin with a shortened day, within a smaller group of students, that will, over the first two weeks, increase towards the full day schedule. (Please see gradual entry schedule for our school attached to this letter). These shortened sessions and smaller groups of students will enable us to work with smaller groups of children in order to build rapport and positive relationships with each individual child. During this two week period, the children have an opportunity to socialize, play, explore their classrooms, and work in
small groups. Teachers will be able to provide more individualized attention in these smaller groups.
As children begin their Kindergarten year, we work with students to establish a positive learning environment that is safe, caring, comfortable, and fun. This is also a crucial time to help familiarize Kindergarten students with their classroom environment, school community, routines, expectations, classmates, and classroom materials.
We are providing you with our school’s Kindergarten “gradual entry” schedule for September, 2010 early so that you may make arrangements in your schedule for childcare if needed. Please note that the students will be divided into 2 groups for the first few days of school. Your child will be in Group A or B. We will send home a reminder notice to you near the end of the summer as well, and this information will also be posted on our school website: www.thompson.sd38.bc.ca
You will receive more detailed information about your child’s Kindergarten class the first few days back to school, however, some general information to note:
-please ensure your child brings food items/snacks that do not contain nuts (we have students with severe nut allergies)
-your child will receive a letter on Friday, September 10 once our Kindergarten classes are
finalized to let you know who will be his/her Kindergarten teacher
Thank you for your support as we strive to gently transition our students into Full Day Kindergarten. All children will attend on the first day of school on Tuesday, September 7 from 1:00-2:00 and we will all meet in the school gym. We welcome both you and your child to Full Day Kindergarten at Thompson School and are excited at beginning a partnership between home and school to help build students’ confidence, enjoyment, independence, and success! See you in September!
